Slate is a fine-grained rock that formed some 400-600 million years ago from compacted sedimentary clay deposits in ancient seas. Slate is composed of two lines of breakability: cleavage and grain. These lines of breakability make it possible to split slate into the thin sheets used in slate roofing.
