Specialist timber shingle and slate roofing
Timber Shingle Roofing
Shingles and shakes are commonly supplied in hardwood or softwood species. Hardwood options can include Yellow Stringybark, White Mahogany, Bloodwood, Iron Bark or Forest Oak, depending on project requirements and availability. Softwood shingles and shakes are commonly made from Western Red Cedar. A shingle is sawn timber, giving it a more uniform finish. A shake is split, giving it a more rustic texture. Timber shingles do not only provide an elegant and durable roofing solution but also help tackle climate change in a number of ways. Timber shingles take less energy to make. The amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced in the manufacture of timber products is far less than other common building materials, such as steel and concrete. Wood also stores carbon until it decays or is burned.
One of the oldest roofing materials in the world, wood roof shingles date back to the first European settlers in Australia. The traditional shingle roof was made from split timber and is about 100mm and 450mm long. Wood shingle roofs were very popular back then when labour was cheap and trees were free.
Wood shingle roofing is less common today, but it remains a valued option for suitable heritage homes, architectural builds and restoration projects. While roof shingles can be made from materials such as slate and asphalt, timber shingles offer a natural texture and traditional character that many property owners and designers specifically seek out.
Timber shingles and shakes need to be specified for the individual site, roof pitch, exposure, heritage requirements and any applicable bushfire or building controls. Mr Shingles can advise during the specification and estimating stage.
